Housing crisis in Auroville

Dear Auroville and SriAurobindoMother Community:

Since last September a diverse group of Aurovilians, Newcomers, volunteers, and paid workers have been working on a unique project to build a new community in Auroville. The situation of housing in Auroville has been in a critical state for quite some time, and is only getting worse. Responding to this situation, a small group of Newcomers with the guidance of Satprem Maïni of the Earth Institute decided to approach the problem a little differently, and put pressure on Auroville to face this crisis immediately. Thus the Realization project was started. The project aimed to build sustainable and environmentally friendly housing while also being affordable. But the other side of this project was to build community by building this housing together through volunteer work. It was in this spirit that we came together to begin making earth blocks with the technology of Satprem and the Earth Institute, even before we ever had permission to build or a piece of land to build on.
Over the months, we managed a small revolution by getting a piece of land allocated quite quickly and finally getting permission to build. We made thousands of blocks and constructed a movable caretaker house and storage building on site. Right now, our project, however, is at a bit of a standstill. We simply do not have enough funds to build the first phase of housing even with the contributions by the individuals who will be living in the apartments/flats. The intention of the project has been to have each person give according to each person’s capacity and use those funds in common to build Realization not simply for the individuals who will live there but for Auroville itself and all who come to contribute to the growth of the collective Yoga of Auroville.
So we are asking all of you for your help, and we need it now more than ever. We need funding for the building itself, but also for infrastructure, for solar panelling, for water harvesting, and other areas of the project designed to make this an eco-friendly and community-building reality. Below I am pasting the links to the Realization Community website, where you can find out more of all the details about the project and actually see pictures of the project in action (along with a link to the Earth Institute about sustainable architecture and earth bricks). I am also pasting below pieces of information on the financial aspects of the project and other details. (I apologize if the pasted portions are a bit disjointed, as they may not fit from the original documents – please ask for a copy if interested).

We ask for your help, whether you have funds to donate or can find others who do, or can contribute in any other way, including coming to Auroville to help make bricks and build. Even if you don’t have funds, perhaps someone you know does, or perhaps someone you know knows someone who knows someone! Perhaps they like the solar idea and want to fund that, or water harvesting, or making healthy earth bricks for building eco-friendly! You never know how the Divine shall work, so spread the word and be open to the Grace working through you for this Realization project. Auroville needs you around the world just as much as those of us here in order to be realized.
